On Monday, May 29, the American Legion and other local groups, including our parish, stepped out on Broadway for the Memorial Day Parade. Approximately ten parishioners marched behind our lovely parish banner while the cheers of parishioners and neighbors were heard from spots along the way. The parade was followed by a memorial ceremony at Riverview Cemetery. Thanks to the Port Ewen Fire Department for sponsoring refreshments for hungry returning marchers! (Picture thanks to Bob Rizzo.)
Our R.C.I.C. program yielded good results for the Lord, His Church, and our parish as young adults Miss Angelina (Kateri Tekakwitha) Shanley and Miss Isabella (Lucy) Shanley were confirmed and made their First Holy Communion on the evening of May 27 at the Vigil Mass of Pentecost at Sacred Heart Church. With prior authorization, Fr. Arthur Rojas, our administrator, confirmed them as well as gave them First Holy Communion. Thanks to Dcn. Timothy Dean and Mr. Thomas Kristan, Jr. for serving as catechists.
As we bade farewell to Mrs. Barbara McCabe, the secretary for decades at Presentation Church, on Friday, May 26 due to her retirement, the schedule of office hours will be as follows: SACRED HEART, 1055 Broadway, Esopus. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tel. 845/384-6828. PRESENTATION OF THE B.V.M., 209 Hoyt Street, Port Ewen. BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Please call 845/331-0053 to make an appointment with Fr. Rojas beforehand. BOTH OFFICES ARE CLOSED ON MONDAYS AND HOLIDAYS. Please read the bulletin or follow Mass announcements or the Website for any changes.
Our parish denounces the stripping away of the pro-life billboard of the Ulster Deanery Respect Life Committee by vandals in the dead of night on late May 20th or early May 21st. This is the third assault in the span of less than one year on the billboard, which is private property. We call on local authorities, especially law enforcement, to pursue this matter seriously, including the criminal justice process, for this was an assault on freedom of speech as well as property. Photo taken by Fr. Arthur Rojas.
As shown in the picture, Fr. Rojas was surprised by a few of our Seven Sisters - Cecilia Olivares and Cathie Parrinello - at the end of the 11:30 a.m. Mass (Extraordinary Form) on Saturday, May 13th, which was his 17th anniversary of priestly ordination, as they unfurled a lovely banner of congratulations. On Saturday, May 20th, Fr. Oliver will reach 34 years of priestly ordination. Ad multos annos! Thanks to our Seven Sisters and Fasting Brothers teams for supporting their priests in prayer and fasting!
Believe it or not, there are still chances left for our 20 Week Club, which is our signature raffle for our beloved parish. For only $50 per ticket, you could win $50 if your ticket is drawn at our weekly drawing for 20 weeks and then our prizes at the end of the raffle (top prize is $500), which are drawn at a catered luncheon at NO COST to our 20 Week Club ticketholders. Let's all pitch in for a good time and a great cause! Contact ELAINE LONGENDYKE at 914/466-0846 or JEAN KREN SICKLER at 845/392-3804.
We are blessed to have a priest with the Biblical acumen and a shepherd's heart such as Fr. MARC OLIVER. One reason is for the love he has to share the riches of Sacred Scripture with us from time to time, in addition to his homilies at Mass. We continue to mine the deep veins of the Gospel according to St. Matthew with Fr. Oliver on Saturdays, May 20 and 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Sacred Heart Church, 1055 Broadway, Esopus. Families as well as individuals are welcome. Just show up! Free of charge.
We urge all parishioners and neighbors of good will to avail themselves of information on the candidates for school board of the following districts: Kingston City School District (which includes the northern half of our parish) and the New Paltz and Highland districts, which cover the southern portion of our parish. Voters in the Kingston City School District will also vote on the annual budget and capital projects. Also, all parishioners should prepare to vote on June 6th for the Trustees of the Town of Esopus Library.
As we did last year, our families and individual parishioners are most welcome to walk proudly behind our parish banner at the annual Memorial Day Parade on May 29. Let's meet at the parking lot of Dollar General just off Broadway at Port Ewen at 9:30 a.m. Those who cannot walk the length of the parade are welcome to cheer us on along Broadway as the parade makes its way to the Riverview Cemetery. The parade will start at about 10 a.m.
At the request of St. Mary-St. Andrew Parish, Ellenville, our Administrator, Fr. Arthur Rojas, and our parish cooperated with the Ellenville parish's exhibit about Blessed Carlo Acutis and Eucharistic miracles with publicity and a presentation on May 10 before 100 persons, including several attendees from our parish. A first-class relic of Bl. Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006 at the age of 15, was venerated personally by attendees after the bilingual presentation by Fr. Rojas. Photo taken and prepared by Miss Celines Rigual.
During May, the month traditionally associated with Our Lady, we invite you to follow Holy Mary to Whom she wishes to lead us: her son JESUS, especially in the Eucharist! To that end, all people of good will are welcome to join us at the Holy Hour on the First Saturday of the month (May 6) after the 8 a.m. Mass at PRESENTATION Church and at SACRED HEART Church on Saturday, May 27 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. JESUS LOVES IT WHEN YOU VISIT HIM. Our Lady, Mother Mary, is only too happy to share Him with us!
